R370 Will Be Increased To R500

In South Africa, the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been a vital source of financial support for millions of unemployed and low-income individuals. As of April 2025, the SRD grant remains at R370 per month, following a R20 increase from its previous amount of R350.

This modest increment has sparked significant debate and concern among beneficiaries and advocacy groups. Many argue that the R370 monthly grant is insufficient to meet basic living expenses, especially in the face of rising inflation and the increasing cost of essential goods and services. For instance, the average monthly cost for basic food items alone is estimated to be around R1,335, not accounting for other necessities like electricity, water, transportation, and toiletries.

The government’s decision to maintain the SRD grant at R370, while extending its availability until March 2026, reflects an acknowledgment of ongoing economic challenges faced by vulnerable populations. However, the adequacy of this amount continues to be a point of contention, with calls for further increases to align the grant with the national food poverty line, currently set at R624 per person per month

In summary, while the extension of the SRD grant provides continued support to those in need, the current amount of R370 per month is widely viewed as insufficient to cover basic living costs, prompting ongoing discussions and legal challenges aimed at advocating for more substantial financial assistance for South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens.
