About the Casual Merchandiser Role
The Casual Merchandiser position is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced retail environment, has a keen eye for detail, and takes pride in ensuring shelves are always fully stocked and visually appealing.
You will be responsible for implementing Dis-Chem’s merchandising standards, assisting customers, and supporting the store team to drive sales and maintain operational efficiency.
Purpose of the Role
The main purpose of the Casual Merchandiser role is to:

Maintain high merchandising standards in line with Dis-Chem’s operating procedures.

Restock shelves and displays to ensure availability of products.

Provide friendly and helpful customer service at all times.

Support the store team in achieving sales and operational goals.
Minimum Requirements
Essential:
-
Grade 10 or Grade 12 qualification.
-
Up to 6 months of retail experience.
-
Basic computer literacy, particularly MS Office.
-
Willingness to work retail hours (weekends, public holidays, and shifts).
Advantageous:
-
At least 1 year of retail experience.
-
Previous exposure to merchandising or the FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) industry.
Key Responsibilities
As a Casual Merchandiser at Dis-Chem’s Jean Avenue store, you will be expected to:

Stock Management
-
Restock merchandise promptly to ensure maximum sales opportunities.

Store and pack products in the correct locations without delay.
-
Ensure all products on shelves are within their sell-by dates.
-
Rotate stock regularly using the FIFO (First In, First Out) method.
-
Report low stock, out-of-stock items, and damaged or expired goods.

Merchandising Standards

Follow store layout and planogram guidelines.
-
Ensure all shelves are well-presented, with correct labels and pricing.

Build, face up, stock, and maintain merchandising displays.
-
Keep merchandise areas neat, clean, and accessible.

Customer Service
-
Provide friendly, helpful, and courteous assistance to all customers.

Follow up on out-of-stock queries using the customer service list.

Resolve customer stock queries quickly and professionally.

Operational Duties
-
Assist with general stocktaking and inventory counts.

Flatten boxes and move them to designated recycling areas.
-
Handle items carefully to minimise losses.
-
Ensure items without barcodes are clearly marked.
-
Support back shopping activities and assist in training new staff.

Health & Safety Compliance
-
Lift and move heavy boxes safely.
-
Follow all health and safety protocols.
-
Maintain physical upkeep of the store.

Required Competencies
Essential Skills:

Strong command of the English language.

Ability to analyse ZMORE reports for ordering and stock taking.
