Mozambican Attempted Rape Suspect Beaten By Community

A 39 year old Mozambican national accused of attempting to rape a South African woman was apprehended and beaten by the community in Redcliffe – KZN today (Tuesday).

Residents contacted the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre and reported a large mob beating a male on the road. Reaction Officers were dispatched to investigate further and located the male at 16:51 on Valley View Drive. He sustained blunt force trauma and whip marks to his head & body. The mob fled prior to the arrival of First Responders.

Reaction Officers interviewed multiple individuals at a nearby informal area and established that the injured male attempted to rape a 29 year old female. Officers located the victim at her residence. She explained that the accused arrived at her tuck shop and waited for all other customers to leave.

He thereafter began assaulting her and dragged her into a room. He attempted to rape her, but her screams attracted the attention of other residents who arrived to provide assistance. The suspect was pursued by residents of the informal settlement after he fled on foot. The crowd grew larger during the pursuit and the male was eventually apprehended on Valley View Drive where he was beaten.

The suspect was handed over to the Verulam SAPS for further investigation.
